Frequently Asked Questions:
What is yoga? Hatha Yoga is a very powerful physical and mental health wellness system comprised of structural postures "asanas," breathing exercises "pranayama", and meditation techniques. The modern usage of the word "yoga" tends to focus only on the physical or fitness aspects of the practice. A more correct and deeper understanding of the practice of yoga is that it is a gateway to the realization of the true self. In a cultural context, it's roots come from India but it's teachings are compatible with all spiritual traditions.
Do I need to be already fit and flexible to do yoga? No. You begin wherever you are at. Please give us a phone call or email first to discuss any questions or concerns you might have. If you are under the current care of a health-care practitioner for any condition that you might feel would affect your ability to participate in a regular group class, you will be required to obtain their release. Those with limited mobility issues due to age, illness, or weight might want to schedule a few private Yoga Therapy style sessions first before joining a regularly scheduled class.
Will I need any special clothes or equipment? Wear what you normally would for any exercise class; leggings or shorts, a tank top or T-shirt. Make sure that any T-shirt you wear is not too loose - it might flop in your face in a forward bend. Yoga is practiced in bare feet on a special "sticky" mat. For your first class, you may use a studio mat. After that you will need to purchase your own for hygeine purposes. We sell extra thick mats in a variety of colors for $20. You can also buy mats at numerous retailers. The studio is equipped with all the other props you need - although some students choose to buy their own for home practice.
Anything else I should know before my first class? For your first class, please arrive about 10 - 15 minutes early in order to fill out a registration form. Your instructor will spend a few minutes getting to know your exercise background, etc. Please do not wear scents (perfumes, etc.) and also do not put lotion on your hands or feet before class. Yoga should be practiced on an empty stomach. You may bring bottled water to class.
